What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also referred to as IP Telephony.
VoIP is simply the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks. The Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed for data networking, and the success of IP in becoming a world standard for data networking has led to its adaption to voice networking
VoIP has become popular largely because of the cost advantages to consumers over traditional telepone networks.

Do I have to have Broadband to use it?
No, but ISDN and dialup modem users may find the sound quality is much more variable. It's important to make sure you are using the correct codec to compress the voice data if you are using a lower bandwidth line. If using a dialup or ISDN connection, we recommend you use a g729a or GSM codec.
On an ADSL line with 256k upstream, you can get 3 to 4 concurrent calls. When using our service in a busy office of upto 10 people, customers typically dedicate one broadband service to their phone provision.

Can I keep my existing phone number?
Yes, if you have a BT number then BT can, subject to survey, port the number to our system.
The process is that you sign up with a temporary new number, then we put the port through, and replace the temporary new number. Number porting takes 7 - 14 working days for a simple BT line and costs £40+VAT. It is important to remember that when you port a number away from BT, BT will cease that line, and all its associated services such as broadband.
