What is a VPN?
A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organisation's network.
Is a VPN secure?
A VPN works by using the shared public infrastructure (Internet) while maintaining privacy through security procedures and tunneling protocols such as the Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).
In effect, the protocols, by encrypting data at the sending end and decrypting it at the receiving end, send the data through a "tunnel" that cannot be "entered" by data that is not properly encrypted.

Why do I need a VPN?
A VPN is a cost effective way of allowing secure remote access to your organisations network. It is mainly used by 'remote workers' to access their office data from home, or whilst on the move, but can also be used to semi-permanently link one or more sites together.
However in many cases, a WAN Link or Fibre Optic Link may be more suitable. The usefulness of a VPN is dependant on numerous factors, including number of users, existing network infrastructure and the amount of data that will be passed along the VPN.
